How to Create a WhatsApp QR Code with a Pre-Filled Message

A WhatsApp QR code with a pre-filled message removes two steps: customers do not need to save your number, and they do not need to decide how to begin the conversation. A scan opens a chat with useful text already composed, while the customer remains in control of sending it.

What the QR code contains

The QR normally contains a wa.me link. Its path uses the full international phone number with digits only: country code followed by the number, without a plus sign, spaces, brackets or a leading domestic zero. The optional text parameter contains the pre-filled message in URL-encoded form.

For example, the visible message may say: Hello, I would like a quote for your service. Encoding turns spaces and punctuation into characters that a browser can safely pass to WhatsApp. A QR generator should perform this conversion for you; manually editing the URL is a common source of broken links.

Create it step by step

Choose WhatsApp

Open QR Lion, select the WhatsApp QR type and use the dedicated fields rather than a generic URL field.

Normalize the number

Select or enter the country code and add the subscriber number as digits only. For Australia, remove the domestic leading zero after +61; for India, use 91 followed by the ten-digit number.

Write a useful opening

Prefill context such as the product, location or request. Keep it short enough that a customer can review it before tapping Send.

Generate and customize

Choose a high-contrast pattern, optional logo and a call to action such as Scan to chat on WhatsApp.

Write a message that improves routing

A good pre-filled message identifies where the scan came from. Packaging might use: Hello, I need help with [product name]. A real-estate sign might use: Hello, I am interested in the property at [address]. An event stand can name the event. This gives the support or sales team immediate context without asking the customer to repeat what they scanned.

Avoid collecting sensitive information in the initial message. Ask customers to send order numbers, medical details, passwords or payment information only through an appropriate secure process. The QR is an entry point, not a substitute for privacy and support procedures.

Test before publishing

Test logged in and logged out

Check the mobile WhatsApp app and, where relevant, WhatsApp Web.

Verify the recipient

A code that opens the wrong valid number may look successful, so confirm the displayed business identity.

Read the exact message

Check line breaks, punctuation and special characters after encoding.

Print at final size

Maintain a quiet zone, strong contrast and a practical size; test the actual material under normal lighting.

Static or dynamic?

A static QR can directly contain the WhatsApp link and continue working independently of a redirect service. A dynamic QR points first to a managed short link, which lets you change the WhatsApp number or message later and measure scans. Dynamic is valuable for packaging and signs with long print lives; static is appropriate when the number and wording are permanent and analytics are unnecessary.

Whichever method you choose, print a readable fallback such as the business phone number. Review the destination periodically because team numbers, routing processes and campaign wording change. A QR code is effective only while the conversation behind it is actively monitored.
